Monte Roen Trail
Signature Trail in Tramin & South Tyrolean Unterland
18-Km Trail Tour: Starting from the highest peak of the Mendel Range on the border between South Tyrol and Trentino, embark on one of the longest single trails in Tramin & South Tyrolean Unterland. To be more precise, this fully-fledged trail tour descends nearly 2,000 meters into the valley. Endurance and riding skills amidst the mountain pines are essential for this adventure.
Signature Trail in Tramin & South Tyrolean Unterland
Starting from the Monte Roen, the trail offers a total of 1,900 downhill metres, natural ground, panoramic views, a lake and vineyards at the end.
The Monte Roen sits enthroned like a massive butte above Lake Kaltern. The almost vertical rising rock faces are awe-inspiring, but are also a challenge. Initially crossing towards the Schwarzer Kopf, the trail continues flowy to the weather cross where the panorama and the views into the valley can be enjoyed for the last time on this tour.
After the Grauner Joch, the Monte Roen Trail disappears in the forest where the start of a first-class natural trail is waiting. Here you will need concentration because the narrow path nestles closely to the mountain, and its roots and rock terraces are quite a challenge. There are also hairpin bends. It gets hotter with every metre and you can feel how the heat rises in the sparse forest.
WORTH KNOWING
The region is renowned for its wine cultivation, evident in labels such as Gewürztraminer and Kalterersee for grape varieties. The Kalterersee, for instance, pairs well with almost all dishes. Its recommended serving temperature is between 14-16 °C, slightly lower than other red wines.
INSIDER TIP
In Margreid, the Urrebe, the oldest grapevine in South Tyrol dating back to 1601, grows along a house wall in the village center.
